about this image
Like several other of my clients over the years, this band came to me prior to their appearance on the Vans Warped Tour because they needed something unique and eye-catching to help them stand out. Normally I'd suggest something fairly vibrant and contrasty for this purpose, but after spending several hours listening to the band's music, I realized that "colorful" wasn't exactly the greatest match for their particular style. So I decided that a dramatic, stormy-looking sky would provide a much better backdrop, and I threw in a few black birds to add a little bit of "movement".
Lit with three Elinchrom Ranger Quadras-- one boomed overhead inside a 5' octabank, and the other two placed in 42x18 stripboxes on both sides of the band for rim. The side lights were set to roughly 2 stops hotter than the key.

tools & gear used
In Photoshop I dropped in the new sky, used a custom brush to add the black birds, and performed lots of manual dodging and burning to give the image some added "punch". I also ran Topaz Adjust to bring out some additional detail and contrast.
